Stories

Throughout the project and as a result of further funding from Support Staffordshire we have been collecting the memories of local people who remember Travellers passing through.

It has been important to collect these memories because they are from the early to mid 1900's, a time when the way of life for Travellers changed. Laws were tightened that made it harder to live a nomadic life and motorised transport became popular and affordable. This brought to an end the excitement of Travellers or the Fair suddenly, overnight, arriving in Staffordshire and Derbyshire villages. This is something that many local people miss and remember now with fond affection.
